AMTRAK announced plans to purchase 21 new FS9PHI diesel electric locomotives from Electro-Motive Division for approximately $46 million. The locomotives, similar in design to those purchased by the California Department of Transportation in 1994, will be assigned to the Amtrak West strategic business unit and will operate on San Diegan, Capitol, and San Joaquin trains, and with new Talgo equipment on order for the Pacific Northwest Corridor.
Initial delivery is expected in 1998.
