50 EMD units added to SP power program - Southern Pacific buys power units from General Motor's Electro-Motive Division - Brief Article

Railway Age, July, 1993

Southern Pacific is under way with a locomotive upgrading program, but it's also acquiring new power--25 3,800hp GP60s and 25 4,000-hp SD70Ms from General Motors, Electro-Motive Division. Total purchase price will be in excess of $60 million. Delivery of the GP60s will be completed in March 1994. The SD70M locomotives will come online next May and June. Said Glenn Michael, SP's vice president-operations: "These units, along with hundreds that have undergone and will undergo complete rehabilitation, represent a significant power improvement."

SP has a contract with EMD for complete overhaul of 100 units, and it's negotiating maintenance-management contracts with both EMD and General Electric that would affect more than 400 locomotives.
