On-dock rail yard is boon to Portland - Portland, Oregon facility gains 32.1 % in container volume - Brief Article
Railway Age, Sept, 1992
The Port of Portland (Ore.) has reported a 32.1% increase in container volume for this year's first six months, and much of the credit for the increase goes to a 34-acre, on-dock rail yard which was expanded two years ago at a cost of $4.5 million.
"We can handle two unit trains or a total of 56 double-stack railcars simultaneously at our rail yard," said Bob Lipscomb, marine marketing manager. "Configuration of the yard, with its runaround loop track, makes for a fast and efficient operation without need for switching."
Portland is served by Burlington Northern, Union Pacific, and Southern Pacific.
