RELATED ARTICLE: VISITING THE BUTCHART GARDENS

The Butchart Gardens, about 13 miles northwest of downtown Victoria, sprawls gracefully over a 50-acre former estate. Paths lead through grounds filled with planting beds, pools, and a mammoth sunken garden in an old limestone quarry. Planting ideas abound; bring a camera and a notepad. You can dine on the grounds (there are two restaurants and a coffee shop) and browse in the gift shop. The Butchart Gardens, at 800 Benvenuto Avenue, opens at 9 daily; closing time varies by season (10:30 P.M. June 15 through September 2). Admission costs $14 Canadian, $7 ages 13 through 17, $1.50 ages 5 through 12. For visitor information, call (604) 652-4422.
