Explore by mountain bike - Tips & Trips

Sunset, July, 2002 by James Boone, Candy Moulton, Virginia Rainey, Scott Schumaker, Marty Wentzel

SANDPOINT, IDAHO Explore by mountain bike Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a lot of people's pet ski resort, but check out the burgeoning northern Idaho village when the snow melts. A lift can take you to the top of its 6,400-foot slopes for hiking, huckleberry picking, music festivals, even weddings.

One of our favorite pastimes is Ken Barrett's Green Owl bike tour down the mountain's backside. "I was bombing around in an old sports car and discovered this beautiful dirt road connecting to the top of Schweitzer," says Barrett, of All About Adventures. "We ride through places few folks have seen." The trip offers a local spin, like libations at a logger bar and a shuttle back to Schweitzer in county school buses.
