'Remembrance' columbine - floral arrangement to honor Columbine High School shooting victims - Brief Article

Sunset, March, 2000 by Marcia Tatroe

* This spring, a columbine called 'Remembrance' is being introduced to honor the victims of the shooting tragedy at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. 'Remembrance' bears flowers with white rosettes poised on velvety purple stars with long spurs of the same color. Clusters of blossoms dance on 24-inch stems above delicate, fernlike foliage from late spring through early summer.

Like other columbines, 'Remembrance' is hardy in all climate zones and can be grown at elevations to 9,000 feet. Plant 'Remembrance' in well-drained soil in borders, woodland gardens, or containers. At lower elevations, it prefers morning sun and afternoon shade; at higher elevations, give it full sun. Water regularly during dry spells and spread mulch around plants to keep roots cool and moist.

Look for plants bearing a distinctive blue label in garden centers and nurseries. Thanks to corporate and community sponsors, all proceeds from the sale of this plant will go toward programs to teach tolerance and appreciation of diversity in schools across the nation.
