Pull-up storage - Home: Guide - innovative garage storage design - Brief Article

Sunset, March, 2003 by Ann Bertelsen

Mike and Naomi Gardner and their three young children ski, canoe, and bike. So when they built their dream home in Santa Cruz, California, one of their priorities was a high-ceilinged garage with clearance for their SUV's equipment-laden roof rack as well as storage space for all of their gear.

The solution? A 12-foot ceiling and getting the gear off the floor. The couple installed a pulley system for each bike, and eye bolts and rope for the canoe. Skis are hung on wooden pegs mounted on a 2-by-4 attached to the wall.

DESIGN: Bret Hancock, Thacher & Thompson Architects, Santa Cruz, CA (831/457-3939).

PULLEY SYSTEM: $40 each at Brookstone Hard to Find Tools (800/926-7000) and Tool Crib (800/884-9132).
