Design winner: rusted steel gets a new look

Sunset,  April, 2006  by Lauren Bonar Swezey

Humble building materials such as steel and rebar take center stage in Margaret Joplin's Tucson garden. A 5-foot-tall by 10-foot-wide rusted-metal sculpture is a particular standout: Its decorative function cleverly disguises its origin as a sheet of steel used to stamp out mailbox flags.

For Joplin's innovative use of standard building materials, judges honored her with an Award of Excellence in Sunset's 2004-2005 Western Garden Design Awards program.
