Here, a pocket cut from a contrasting fabric makes the perfect place to tuck in utensils and a napkin.
TIME: One hour per place mat
YARDAGE: About 1 1/2 yards for six place mats, plus 1/4 yard contrasting fabric for pockets
1. Follow steps 1 and 2 for ribbon place mat (at left).
2. Topstitch hem.
3. Cut a rectangular piece of contrasting fabric to serve as the pocket. Ours measured 4 by 9 inches; we also trimmed the top edge to an angle.
4. On the pocket fabric, fold raw edge under 1/2 inch on all sides, and press. Topstitch top edge, then topstitch the other three sides to the lower right-hand corner of the place mat.
