Mayday tree (Prunus padus) dangles drooping clusters of white blossoms with almondlike scent in May, followed by small, glossy black fruit and yellow-orange autumn leaves. Reaches 20 feet or taller with an equal spread. Sun to partial shade. Hardy to 7,000 feet.

Amelanchier canadensis bears clusters of fragrant white flowers in early spring, juicy dark blue fruit in midsummer, and autumn leaves in yellow, orange, and red. Reaches 25 feet tall with a nearly equal spread. Sun. Hardy to 8,500 feet.

A. grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliant' has white flowers, sweet purplish black fruit, and autumn leaves in red and orange. Same size as A. canadensis (above). Sun to filtered shade. Hardy to 7,000 feet.
