A high bar for sustainability

Sunset, Dec, 2009 by Brian Cullen

Your list of top smart fish shops ("How to Shop the Fish Market," September, page 78) left off the fabulous fish market at Pike Place in Seattle. It has real fishmongers who know their stuff. The market has the full range of all the seafood you Listed and then some. You may also want to check out our Fisherman's Terminal, which also boasts an excellent fish store and fishermen selling fresh fish right off their boats.

Editor's note When associate food editor Elaine Johnson researched our story last summer, she discovered Pike Place Fish Market selling many local and sustainable fish, but also unsustainable choices such as Chilean seabass and monkfish. Both are in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's "avoid" category.

Many generally good shops were contenders for our list; in the end, those chosen mainly carried sustainable fish, and none from the "avoid" list. For an expanded list of sustainable seafood shops, go to sunset.com/smartseafood
