Beans to baskets to books … on display - display wall

Sunset, March, 1989

Pairs of horizontal recesses store and display everything from beans to baskets in this house in Fairfax, California. Built into the walls of the living room, kitchen, library, and hall, they vary in depth and length but always appear in twos. Their clean lines complement the white-painted walls of the contemporary house, designed by owner Harry Murphy.

In the living room and hall shelves, lights built above the openings dramatically display Murphy's basket collection and brighten a shelf holding stereo equipment. To avoid marks and make cleaning easy, white synthetic marble (Corian) covers the bottoms of all the recesses.
