Laundry closet fits behind a sliding door

Sunset, March, 1989

When a remodeled bathroom appropriated two-thirds of a utility room, designer Margaret L. Baldwin turned what was left into this laundry closet. Washer and dryer fill the 2-1/2- by 4-1/2-foot space. Below a fluorescent fixture, shelves hold plastic baskets for sorting clothes as they come from the dryer.

Instead of space-eating hinged doors, the closet hides behind a wall-hugging sliding panel made of two plywood sheets joined with a 1-by-4 frame. The panel rolls on overhead barn-door tracks.
