For a look at Sunset's gardens and buildings, please drop by
Sunset, Sept, 1989
For 38 years, we've opened the doors of Sunset's headquarters to visitors. Maybe you've previously been among the 34,000 people who each year tour our ranch-style buildings-by noted Western designer Cliff May-and our 7 acres of landscaped gardens in Menlo Park, California. Even so, you're bound to see something new each time you stop by.
The new water-saving landscaping out front, shown and described on the preceding pages, is just one reason to visit. Inside, hostesses take you to newly remodeled editorial offices to see art directors, writers, editors, and production staff putting together the pages of the magazine. In the test kitchens, you'll see food editors trying out recipes you may read about in the next year.
The tour also points out Early California antiques, Navajo rugs, and paintings in our main lobby, and visits our entertainment area.
On your own, stroll through our large main garden. The central lawn-a sweeping 1.3 acres gets used regularly for everything from photographic shoots for Sunset stories to settings for corporate gatherings. Company golf tournaments take place on a small putting green.
Paved paths take you past trees and shrubs planted to reflect the West's varied climates, from the rhododendrons and azaleas of the Pacific Northwest to the sycamores and desert cactus of the South-
west. For seasonal color, flower beds throughout the gardens are replanted at least three times a year.
The south building and main garden are open 8 to 4:30 weekdays. Free tours (about 50 minutes) begin at 10:30, 11:30, 1, 2, and 3. Groups of eight or more should reserve; call (415) 321-3600 and ask to speak to the tour hostess.
