In three steps, a new kitchen and family room - kitchen remodeling

Sunset, May, 1991

In three steps, a new kitchen and family room A three-part remodel turned a cramped kitchen into this long, sleek, split-level space. The main steps were removing an interior wall between the kitchen and a laundry room, adding a 14- by 16-foot family room and breakfast area at the opposite end, and widening an opening to the dining room by about 6 feet.

The hub of the kitchen is a black granite island. From this central point, the owners can look through glass doors to the dining room or down into the family room. Architect was Hiro Morimoto, Berkeley.
