A pull-along sled for baby
Sunset, Dec, 1989
A pull-along sled for baby Ski like a Scandinavian and pull your baby behind you when you go cross-country this winter. A specially designed sled--sometimes called a pulk, its Norwegian name--makes it easy. The sled has a cover and a removable seat, and connects to an adult by a secure harness and rigid aluminum poles. Many nordic touring areas allow them on groomed trails; some even offer them for rent.
Based on a design developed for carrying supplies on expeditions, these 10-pound sleds with aluminum runners are for children up to about 50 pounds. You can also use one for your own gear (or picnics).
"Feedback has been terrific, from both adults and children," says Don Fyfe, a Lake Tahoe ski shop owner. "The sleds pull up and down hills easily, so it's not too hard on the parent's back." Even so, unless you're very experienced, stick to groomed trails on level terrain. If you do fall, baby and sled should not tip over.
Don't plan to last a full day on your first outing; tailor your expectations to the age of your child, your level of fitness, the terrain, the weather, the glide of the snow. Add warmth with sleeping bag or blanket.
The sleds generally cost more than $300, depending on extras (a winscreen, infant harness, front or back brakes), but you can rent one; cost ranges from about $12 for a half-day to $20 for a full day. They can be secured to most car roof racks with straps or stretch cords.
Many outdoor sports stores and cross-country resorts sell and rent the sleds. Here are some in major ski areas (we weren't able to find any in Utah). Reserve early; most places have just one or two, and they're booked several weeks ahead.
In California: Alpenglow Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, (916) 583-6917; Tahoe Donner, Truckee, 587-9484; Bear Valley Cross-country Ski Center, (209) 753-2834.
In Colorado: Breckenridge Nordic Center, (303) 453-6855; Golden Peak Rental Shop, Vail, 476-5601, ext. 4410.
Or you can call the domestic manufacturer, Mountainsmith, at (800) 426-4075, to find locations near your home where you can buy or rent the sleds.
