Bulbs and bulblike plants - Special Issue: Fall/Winter Garden Guide

Sunset, Fall-Winter, 1994 by Lauren Bonar Swezey

SOME OF THE showiest flowers appear from bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes, and tuberous roots (often lumped together as bulbs). Bulbs thrive in many different environments. Daffodils and irises bloom well in both the desert and mountain regions. Other bulbs have more specific growing needs. But you can successfully grow many bulbs out of their range by planting them in containers and growing them indoors (amaryllis, for example) or by chilling them in the refrigerator (in mild-winter climates, crocus, hyacinths, and tulips should be chilled for six weeks).
