More cross-country in Yosemite

The oldest ski resort in California, Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park is hardly antiquated. Keeping up with the West's growing interest in nordic skiing, Badger now boasts new, groomed cross-country tracks and, for the first time, rentals of both alpine and nordic equipment at Badger Pass Lodge.

In an experiment last year, about 10 miles of groomed trails were laid down out of Badger Pass, following Glacier Point Road and opening its spectacular high-elevation scenery to cross-country skiers. This year, about 22 of the resort's 90 miles of marked cross-country trails will be groomed, letting nordic skiers travel, free of charge, all the way to Glacier Point's Yosemite Valley overlook.

Rental gear includes boots and skis in the midweight touring class. Skis have an integrated boot-and-binding system recommended for both beginners and intermediates.

Nordic rentals will still be available at Curry Village when there's snow in the valley. Yosemite Nordic Ski School, which runs both rental concessions, also offers snow-camping expeditions, winter survival seminars, overnight trips, and all-day instruction. Badger Pass is open daily 9 to 4:30; lift tickets for alpine skiing cost $15 per weekday, $16 per weekend day. If you're interested in a rental package, there are two to consider, each costing $20: nordic skiers get equipment and a half-day lesson on a groomed trail; alpine skiers get gear rental, use of lifts, and two lessons.
