Hose rolls out from under deck
Sunset, June, 1985
A pull-out cart stores beneath this 14-1/2-inch-high deck to keep a hose close to a faucet but out of sight. The shallow cart fits beneath the deck's joists and blends with the facing that masks the underpinnings. It rools on four lawn-mower wheels mounted inside the cart's frame.
Built of 2-by-6s, the cart measures 31 by 48 inches and has a bottom of horizontal 2-by-6s spaced about 3 inches apart. The front is built up to make it conform with the deck's curving edge.
Short blocks of 2-by-6, nailed into the longer sides at each corner, add thickness to give solid support for the 4-inch-long lag screws running through the wheels. The cart rolls on concrete tiles set flush with the ground. Beneath the deck, lengths of scrap wood guide the cart straight into its storage area.
The cart and deck were designed and built by owners Carolyn and Edwin Elder of Portland.
