Walk-around art…a sculpture garden near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena - Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California

Carefully lifted by crane from construction chaos at the currently expanding Los Angeles County Museum of Art, eight major sculptures have alighted as temporary residents in Southern California's newest outdoor art setting--a grassy hilltop meadow at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Seven other major works are here on loan from galleries, collectors, and artists. The upcoming months should provide some splendid days for viewing outdoor sculpture, with winter-clear weather offering blue skies and a backdrop of the rugged San Gabriel Mountains.

On loan to the art center until 1987, the county museum works include four monumental Rodin bronzes, Donald Judd's line-up of five open-ended 7-foot concrete cubes, and a three-part brushed stainless steel piece by David Smith that dances with gleaming sunlight. Among those new on display in the West are one of Los Angeles artist Guy Dill's pigmented concrete post-and-lintel constructions and a seven-part abstract Stonehengian grouping by French sculptor Michel Gerard. A George Rickey kinetic work is part of the center's own collection.

Indoor gallery space displays works compatible with the subjects taught at this world-recognized college of industrial design and communication arts. In the main gallery through January 26, you'll see students' works that range from photographic studies to mockups of futuristic automobiles, including illustrations and paintings.

Mondays through Thursdays, garden hours are 9 to dusk, and the gallery is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M.; both are open 9 to 5 Fridays and Saturdays. December 23, hours are 9 to 5. The art center is at 1700 Lida Street, northwest of the Rose Bowl. From the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210) southbound, take the Berkshire Place exit west; turn left on Berkshire Avenue and continue as it becomes Linda Vista Avenue; turn right on Lida Street.

From the Ventura Freeway (State 134) eastbound, take the Orange Grove Boulevard exit and turn left (crossing over the freeway) to Holly Street; turn left. Holly runs into Linda Vista; go right to Lida and turn left.

From downtown Pasadena, take Colorado Boulevard west to Orange Grove and follow preceding directions.
