Lunch or dinner at a cooking school…in Portland, San Francisco, Sausalito
Sunset, Jan, 1986
You might not want to pay up to $10,000 for training as a professional chef, but you can reap the benefits of those who are by visiting one of three private cooking schools on the West Coast.
The schools operate restaurants where you can sample a multitude of elaborate creations. But be forewarned: even an offhand comment can lead to intense discussion, and quality can reflect the varying expertise of the students. Often student chefs serve tables--you may get your dinner from the person who cooked it.
You'll usually have choices for each course, and prices and vary depending on your entree. Buffet nights boast an array of international dishes. These meals are the most popular, so reserve well ahead.
