A cure for the small, dark kitchen

Sunset, Jan, 1986

"Too small" and "too dark" were the complaints about this 1940s kitchen before remodeling. Owner-architect Tom Bosworth solved both problems by designing two pop-outs with windows on three sides. One, a window wall overlooking the rear garden, adds 4 feet to the end of the kitchen. The other, a shallow pop-out window facing the sink in a side wall, pushes out just 5-1/2 inches.

All the windows use metal industrial frames, painted white to match kitchen walls. Above the windows, deep storage shelves hold large or seldom-used serving pieces.

New glass-fronted cupboards above the counter give a nod to the 1940s architecture of the house.
