Heritage Days in Nevada's Carson Valley, July 19 and 20

Minden, Nevada, about 50 miles south of Reno, is normally a quiet ranching town, but this month things get hopping with the Carson Valley Heritage Days, July 19 and 20. There'll be races, an arts and food fair, and live music.

The center of activity will be Douglas County High School, at the junction of State Highway 88 and U.S. 395. About 6 A.M. Saturday and Sunday, some 35 hot-air baloons will lift off from behind the high school, weather and winds permitting. Scheduled for Saturday, drivers in period custumes will leave the high school at 10 A.M. on a classic car rally; to confirm, call (702) 782-8144.

Both days from 9 to 6 in Minden Park, on Esmeralda Street, there'll be live entertainment and some two dozen art and food booths. Look for a chili cook-off on Saturday from 8 to 5.

Minden is an hour's drive south of Reno, 13 miles south of Carson City, on U.S. 395. Park at the high school.
