The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond recently unveiled its plan for a $100-million expansion and renovation designed by London-based American architect Rick Mather. The project calls for a 100,000-square-foot, five-level glass-and-stone structure to be added to the museum's existing 250,000-square-foot building.
The scheme also includes extensive relandscaping, plus a 600-car parking lot whose terraced roof will be used as a sculpture garden. Among other features are several galleries with 16-foot ceilings created specifically for contemporary art, a new restaurant and additional administrative offices. Groundbreaking is set for next year, with completion scheduled for 2007.
