Otterness bronzes on Broadway
Art in America, Nov, 2004
Monumental, stylized bronze figures and animals by New York artist Tom Otterness have dominated Broadway this fall. Prominently placed on islands in the middle of the street and in other public spaces along the thoroughfare from 60th Street to 168th Street, the installation of 25 sculptures is a collaboration of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the Broadway Mall Association and Marlborough Gallery.
The works, some up to 20 feet tall, constitute a retrospective of Otterness's public art, from Head (1984) and Fallen Dreamer (1995) to Large Covered Wagon and Big Moby Dick, both executed this year. The display remains on view through Nov. 22.
