My work is the abstraction and interpretation of stone, sky, fire and water I am fascinated with the play of light and shadow occurring as fog descends or dissipates in the sunlight. "Chiaroscuro" was inspired by the lonely and mysterious fog-enveloped marshes of Pescadero and Point Reyes, California.
The current work explores a form of arashi shibori that utilizes discharging, or removing color from the silk. I intricately pleat small panels of black silk and secure the pre-pleated silk to clear glass wine bottles with fine thread. The bottles are submerged in discharge solution which slowly removes the color from all exposed areas of the silk. Using pleats and secure threads to control which areas are exposed to the discharge solution creates dynamic patterning ... I particularly enjoy the rich colorations achieved through the discharge/dying process, and although I can control the results to some extent, it's that element of surprise--when I unwrap the bottle and reveal hidden layers of color and pattern--that keeps me fascinated.
