New Rolex arts initiative - Front Page - Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative - Brief Article
Art in America, Nov, 2002
Rolex recently announced the launch of its new Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative. Every two years, the program will pair a young talent with an established professional in the fields of dance, literature, music, theater arts and visual arts. The pairs are selected by an advisory board and nominating panels.
Though the relationships may vary depending on the field and individual schedules, the intent is to give the protege a 12-month period of intense instruction and exposure. Both proteges and mentors receive financial compensation. Among the advisors serving on the first board were artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, architect Frank Gehry, former Brooklyn Academy of Music director Harvey Lichtenstein, and the late publisher and editor Paul Gottlieb. The first pairs are Alvaro Siza and Sahel Al-Hiyari (visual arts), Robert Wilson and Federico Leon (theater arts), Toni Morrison and Julia Leigh (literature), William Forsythe and San Jijia (dance), and Sir Colin Davis and Josep Caballe-Domenech (music).
