The Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, U.K., designed by Daniel Libeskind, opened on July 5. The approximately $17-million project includes a relandscaped waterfront site and a 65,000-square-foot structure in steel and concrete with aluminum cladding. According to Libeskind, the building's three interlocking sections, or "shards," symbolize earth, air and water.
Occupying the Earth Shard are exhibition spaces for displays of objects related to British history, while the Air Shard includes an atrium, an observatory and education spaces. The Water Shard, overlooking a canal, features a restaurant, cafe, deck and performance space.
