Archives cache to Forth Worth - Front Page - Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art - Brief Article

Art in America,  Nov, 2003

Landlocked scholars no longer have to travel to the East or West Coasts to consult the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. The Archives, which consists of some 15 million documents including artists' letters, sketches and journals dating from the mid-18th century to the present, recently signed an agreement with the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Tex., to make the museum a microfilm repository, the only one in the central U.S.

The Archives' collection of unrestricted documents (materials not subject to reproduction and viewing limitations) is currently accessible at research centers in New York City and San Marino. Calif., in addition to Washington, D.C. The 7,500 reels of microfilm that contain the complete set of unrestricted records will become available at the Amon Carter in summer 2004.
