New architects for ground zero - Artworld - Brief Article

Art in America,  Nov, 2003

A number of well-known architects have recently signed on to assist in rebuilding Lower Manhattan. In September, Santiago Calatrava was tapped to design a new transportation hub for the downtown area [see "Artworld," Oct. '03]. In early October, Larry A, Silverstein, leaseholder for the World Trade Center site, announced a team of architects to work with master planner Daniel Libeskind on designs for new buildings in the vicinity.

The group includes Jean Nouvel, Fumihiko Maki, David Childs and T.J. Gottediener of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Norman Foster of Foster & Partners. Although his design was one of the finalists in the original WTC competition, Foster told the press that he would start from scratch on the new project. According to Silverstein, each of the architects will design a high-rise building in collaboration with Libeskind.
