Clark prize for arts writing

Art in America,  Dec, 2004

The Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., is gearing up for its 50th anniversary in 2005-06 and has announced the establishment of a new annual prize for arts writing. It is intended to recognize work that bridges scholarly and popular interests, and that appeals to broad audiences. Recipients will be given a $10,000 honorarium and an award designed by Tadao Ando. The first winner will be announced in spring 2006.

Other events planned for the Clark's anniversary include "Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile," co-organized with the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where it appears February-April 2005 before traveling to the Clark, June 5-Sept. 5, 2005. Also scheduled are an exhibition of works collected by Sterling and his brother Stephen, and a national tour of Impressionist pieces from the museum. For the latter, the Clark has selected six small to midsize museums that don't have strong Impressionist holdings, and, rather generously, it will not charge those institutions the usual exhibition fee associated with touring shows. The survey debuts at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in November 2005 and travels to the Phoenix Art Museum, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach and the San Antonio Museum of Art, with one other venue to be announced.
