Gallery Launches Record Label - Paula Cooper Gallery starts avant garde music company, dog w/a bone - Brief Article

Art in America, Dec, 2000 by David Ebony

The Paula Cooper Gallery, which has presented avant-garde music performances in its space since it opened in 1968, has now launched its own record label, dog w/a bone. The label, whose unusual name was proposed by Cooper's son Nicholas, will showcase avant-garde music and works by experimental composers who have been ignored by the music establishment. The three initial offerings from dog w/a bone are CDs prepared and performed by Petr Kotik and his Brooklyn-based S.E.M. Ensemble.

Among the releases, Music by Marcel Duchamp features the artist's musical compositions based on chance procedures, which he wrote between 1912 and 1921. For Philip Guston is a four-CD set of Morton Feldman's monumental five-hour tribute to the painter. And also available is Many Many Women by Petr Kotik, a three-CD set that is a digital remaster of the composer's 1970 polyphonic work inspired by the Gertrude Stein novella of the same name.

Future projects for the label include spoken-word recordings that Kotik will produce and con duct. First in the series is a CD of underknown compositions by John Cage.
