Aga Khan awards for architecture - Artworld - list of projects - Brief Article

Art in America, Dec, 2001

The Aga Khan Awards for Architecture were recently given for nine international building and preservation projects that have artistic, social or historical merit and address the needs of Islamic societies. A special prize was also presented to Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa for his contributions to the field, only the third time an individual has been honored.

The triennial prize, worth $500,000, is named for the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims. The honored projects are New Life for Old Structures, a governmental program in Iran that preserves traditional homes; a development initiative for the village of Ait Iktel in Morocco; Barefoot Architects, a rural development project in India; the Kahere Eila Poultry Farming School in Guinea; the Nubian Museum in Aswan, Egypt; the SOS Children's Village in Aqaba, Jordan; the Olbia Social Centre, Antalya, Turkey; Bagh-e-Ferdowsi, a park in Tehran; and the Datai Hotel in Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia.
