Mold invades Swedish museum - Front Page - Moderna Museet - Brief Article
Art in America, Feb, 2002
A mysterious mold has attacked Stockholm's new Moderna Museet, which was designed by architect Rafael Moneo and inaugurated only three years ago. The building was recently closed after a number of museum staff members came down with illnesses linked to the mold. The cause of the problem is unknown.
The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York dealt with a similar situation in 1994 [see "Front Page," Apr. '94]. Some experts believe that flaws in the construction of the building may be to blame. The museum's geographical location, surrounded by water, may also be a factor. The museum will be closed for approximately 18 months while the building's owner, the Swedish government's National Property Board, cleans and repairs the structure.
