Martin Creed is the recipient of the approximately $29,000 Turner Prize for 2001, given by the Tate Britain in London. The award, sponsored by Channel 4, is given to a British artist under 50 years of age for an outstanding exhibition in the preceding year. Other artists shortlisted for the prize were Richard Billingham, Isaac Julien and Mike Nelson.
Japanese architect Tadao Ando has won the 2002 gold medal from the American Institute of Architects, its highest honor.
Painter David Reed has received the Ursula Blickle Foundation Award, worth approximately $4,500. The prize has been presented annually since 1992 to an artist who has exhibited at the foundation, based in Kraichtal-Uo, Germany, during that year.
The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts recently awarded grants, worth $24,000 each, to 12 individuals, and distributed $61,000 to 40 arts organizations. The visual arts winner is Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (Chang and Marc Voge). Recipient organizations include New York's Art in General, the Drawing Center, Exit Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, HEREart, Creative Time, Independent Curators International and, in Boston, Mobius.
