WTC Memorial design selected - Art World - Brief Article

Art in America, Feb, 2004

The winner of the World Trade Center Memorial competition was announced on Jan. 6, as this issue was going to press. The 13-member jury selected Reflecting Absence, designed by New York architect Michael Arad with Berkeley-based landscape architect Peter Walker, from among the eight finalists. Details (not yet available) are said to differ significantly from Arad's initial entry (Walker joined the team later).

The general plan preserves the towers' footprints, which will be transformed into reflecting pools surrounded by trees. The memorial will honor each victim of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as the six individuals killed in the 1993 WTC bombing.
