New prize for artists, writers and curators

Art in America,  Feb, 2006

The Penny McCall Foundation recently presented its inaugural Ordway Prize to artist Doris Salcedo and CCA Wattis Institute director Ralph Rugoff. Each receives $100,000. Two prizes will be given biennially, one to a midcareer artist and one to an arts writer and/or curator. Recipients must be at least 40 and have created a significant body of work over 15 years. Four finalists will each be awarded $7,500. They are artists Sam Durant and Senga Nengudi, Dla Art Foundation curator Lynne Cooke and freelance critic David Rimanelli.

Individuals are nominated by a panel of art professionals selected by foundation director Jennifer McSweeney. The prize is named in honor of Katharine Ordway, the great-great aunt of McSweeney, who is the daughter of the late Penny McCall, a noted art collector and philanthropist.
