Jim Nichols

Art in America, March, 2005 by Stephanie Cash, David Ebony

Jim Nichols, 76, painter and collagist, died Dec. 18 in San Francisco. He became known in the '70s in New York for sculptures constructed from nailed-together pieces of cookie tins, signage, lunch boxes and other commercial metal products; they were inspired not only by Pop art but also by Tibetan mandalas and Japanese screens.

Nichols had solo shows at the Westmoreland County (Pa.) Museum of Art (1971, '75), the New York Cultural Center (1974) and the Long Beach Museum of Art (1975). In the '70s, he showed regularly with Andre Zarre Gallery in New York.
