Swinging with Sue Williams - Letters

Art in America,  April, 2002  by Alexi Worth

To the Editors:

For the record, Michael Kimmelman's positive review wasn't the "single exception" to the "studious silence" that greeted Sue Williams's New York show in December 2000, as suggested in Barry Schwabsky's recent article [A.i.A., Jan. '02]. Writing in the "Goings On About Town" section of the New Yorker, I described her paintings as having "an utterly limber, volatile grace" and remarked further that, "if de Kooning is the Fred Astaire of this kind of kinesthetic calligraphy, Williams could almost be his Ginger Rogers."
