Iraqi Museums bombed - Art World - Brief Article

Art in America,  May, 2003  by Stephanie Cash,  David Ebony

As we go to press, UNESCO, which prior to the war urged the U.S. to safeguard Iraqi heritage sites during its military attacks on the country, says it has information indicating that a number of Iraq's cultural institutions have sustained extensive damage due to recent U.S. bombing raids. According to UNESCO officials, museums in Tikrit and Monsul, as well as in Baghdad, have been hit.

In late March, journalists were taken to see the ruins of the Tikrit Museum, in northern Iraq, which was struck by a missile on Mar. 22 that allegedly killed four civilians and wounded 13 others. UNESCO also told the press that Baghdad's Al-Zohour (Flowers) Palace, housing a major collection of art and artifacts, has been bombed. In addition, the organization expressed concern that the National Museum in Baghdad might have sustained damage since it is located just 500 yards from a government information ministry building that has been the target of numerous bombing raids by coalition forces since the war began on Mar. 20.
