San Francisco Art Schools stay separate - Art World - Brief Article
Art in America, May, 2003 by Stephanie Cash, David Ebony
After months of discussion about the possibility of a merger between the San Francisco Art Institute and the California College of Arts and Crafts, the two schools decided in February that they would remain separate. Last November, the administrators of both schools began exploring the possibility of uniting to create one of the nation's largest private art schools [see "Artworld," Jan. '03]. While the merger would have eliminated the competition for students and funds in a difficult economic climate, Art Institute board chair Charles Collins told the San Francisco Chronicle that "we felt there would be a diminution of value if they didn't continue to operate separately."
The news followed a similar announcement that the city's Magnes Museum, a recently merged institution comprising the San Francisco Jewish Museum and Berkeley's Judah L. Magnes Museum, was dividing into its separate components [see "Front Page," Apr. '03].
