Barnes gets $25m from Pa
Art in America, May, 2006
On Mar. 28, the state of Pennsylvania announced a $25-million grant to the Barnes Foundation for construction of its new building in downtown Philadelphia. The grant is in the form of capital redevelopment funds for the city, and Governor Edward Rendell indicated to the press that more help might be forthcoming if needed. The institution, struggling to maintain fiscal solvency, has claimed that the only viable solution is to move from suburban Merion to the central location on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, not far from the Philadelphia Museum of Art [see "Front Page," Feb. '05]. Some critics have accused the trustees of keeping the museum on the brink of bankruptcy in order to force the move.
Since 2002, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Annenberg and Lenfest Foundations have contributed $3.1 million for the Barnes's operating costs, and are helping to raise $150 million for the move. Museum officials have not disclosed details or amounts of the 40 donations made so far.
