Dali or not Dali?
Art in America, May, 2006
Ever a favorite among forgers and shysters, Salvador Dali created a vast array of work, copies of which, plus outright fakes, have been at the center of countless scams. Now scholars and collectors have a place to turn to for help. The Salvador Dali Research Center was recently set up in New York to provide opinions as to the works' authenticity and value, as well as information on the life of the enigmatic artist.
The center's committee is chaired by art dealer Alex Rosenberg, who worked closely with Dali and helped publish 165 editions of his original prints before 1975. Other members include Marshall Rousseau, former director of the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla.; art historian Phyllis Tuchman; curator and art historian Charles Stuckey; NYU professor Edward Sullivan; numerous other certified appraisers and four former presidents of the Appraisers Association of America, including Rosenberg, as well as current head David Gallagher. Inquiries should be directed to: The Salvador Dali Research Center, 3 East 69th St., New York, NY 10021, Attn: Dr. Alex Rosenberg.
