The Judith Rothschild Foundation has given 15 grants totaling $150,000 for 2008 to advance the reputations of recently deceased under-known artists. Funds, ranging in amounts from $5,000 to $20,000, are typically given to museums or artists' estates and may be used for exhibition and publication support, acquisitions, archives upkeep, research and other projects.
The artists selected for this year are Charles Biederman, James Castle, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Perle Fine, Jackson Mac Low, Lee Lozano, Salvatore S. Meo, Robert Overby, Homer Page, Louise Rosskam, Alan Shields, Anne Truitt, Leo Valledor and Brett Weston. Also receiving a grant is a group exhibition at the Spertus Museum, Chicago, focusing on African-American art after the Harlem Renaissance and including Charles Alston, William Artis, Lamar Baker, Richmond Barthe, Selma Burke, Joseph Delaney, Clementine Hunter, Ronald Joseph, Rose Piper, Haywood Bill Rivers, Charles Sebree, Charles White and Hale Woodruff.
