The Austin Museum of Art has abandoned its plans to build a new $43-million, 125,000-square-foot building designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects. The scheme was adopted in the late 1990s in the midst of a strong economic climate in Texas. But museum officials have found fund-raising to be a daunting task in recent years.
And, while $14 million was raised for the project, $13 million has already been spent on architectural fees and land purchases. In addition, museum officials determined that the new building's $9-million annual operating cost (more than triple its current budget), would be too difficult to sustain.
