Art in America, August, 2005

Elizabeth Murray

Spanning the career of the painter and sculptor who has been exhibiting her distinctive quasi-abstract shaped canvases since the 19708, the 75 works in this show were selected by Robert Storr. The exhibition appears at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Oct. 23, 2005-Jan. 9, 2006.

Jon Kessler

The New York artist creates an elaborate site-specific installation involving jury-rigged kinetic sculptures, monitors, screens, projectors and advertisement panels, at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, Oct. 23, 2005-Jan. 23, 2006.

Peter Hujar

Friend and contemporary of Diane Arbus, Hujar became a significant chronicler of demimonde nightlife and counter-culture celebrities in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, before he succumbed to AIDS in 1987. A selection of some 75 black-and-white photographs, with a concentration on never-before-seen works, is at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, Oct. 23, 2005-Jan. 23, 2006.

Stephen Shore

A restless and amusing visual diary of more than 300 pictures taken as Shore traveled around the U.S. in 1972-73 demonstrates why this maverick of color photography has exerted such a strong pull on subsequent practitioners. "American Surfaces" is on view at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, Oct. 23, 2005-Jan. 23, 2006.

Fra Angelico

The first major exhibition of Fra Angelico's work since the cinquecentenary exhibition in Florence in 1955, and the first ever in this country, this show brings together about 70 paintings, drawings and illuminated manuscripts. Also included are 40 works by the Renaissance master's assistants and followers. The exhibition appears at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Oct. 25, 2005-Jan. 29, 2006.

Gajin Fujita and Pablo Vargas-Lugo

Two young artists gaining international recognition, Fujita, from L.A., and Vargas- Lugo, from Mexico City, engage in a cross-cultural dialogue in this show of some 30 works, including paintings and large-scale installations. The exhibition is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Oct. 27, 2005-Feb. 12, 2006.

Odilon Redon

"Beyond the Visible: The Art of Odilon Redon" features more than 100 paintings and works on paper given to the Museum of Modern Art in 2000 by the Ian Woodner Family Collection. Many of the works by the Symbolist artist have never before been shown in the U.S. The show is on view at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Oct. 30, 2005-Jan. 23, 2006.

Part Object Part Sculpture

After a three-year hiatus, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus inaugurates its newly renovated gallery spaces with "Part Object Part Sculpture," an overview of sculpture since the 1940s. Among the artists are Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Gober, Eva Hesse, Jasper Johns, Yayoi Kusama, Piero Manzoni, Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly.
