Art in America, August, 2005

Robert Adams

"Turning Back: A Photographic Journal of Re-exploration" is Adams's revision of Lewis and Clark's journey westward, using their ultimate goal, the Pacific Northwest, as the focus of his project. In 164 photographs, taken during a trip from the coast inland, he examines the results of generations of logging that have left swaths of barren landscape where lush rain forests once grew. Organized by Sandra S. Phillips, the show is on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Sept. 29, 2005-Jan. 3, 2006, and is scheduled to travel through 2006.

The Surreal Calder

This show examines the influence of Surrealism on sculptor Alexander Calder, who participated in the defining 1936 "Surrealist Object" exhibition in Paris but is not usually associated with the Surrealists. Created between 1932 and 1947, the nearly 60 objects, ranging from works on paper to sculpture, feature bio-morphic and metamorphic forms with sometimes cosmic overtones. Curated by Mark Besenthal, the selection is on view at the Menil Collection in Houston, Sept. 30, 20054an. 15, 2006, then travels to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Mar. 3-May 21, 2006, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, June 11-Sept. 10, 2006.

Candida Hofer

Among the eminent contemporary German photographers taught by Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Dusseldorf Kunstakademie in the 1970s and '80s, Hofer has for the past three decades created studies of the unpopulated interiors of public spaces. With an emphasis on recent work, this selection of 50 large-scale chromogenic prints includes images shown for the first time in the U.S. The survey was co-organized by the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach, where it ran last spring, and the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, to which it travels Oct. 1, 2005-Jan. 1, 2006. Subsequent itinerary: Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Jan. 21-Apr. 16, 2006; Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, May 5-Aug. 13, 2006; Museum of Art, Brigham Young University, Provo, Sept. 14, 2006-Jan. 6, 2007; Knoxville Museum of Art, Feb. 23-May 20, 2007.

Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler

"America Starts Here" is the first retrospective of Ericson and Ziegler's 10-year collaboration, from 1985 until Ericson's death in 1995. Some 20 video presentations and conceptual projects, from site-specific installations to drawings and sculptures, detail the team's career linking landscape and community through public art. Co-curated by Bill Arning and Ian Berry, the show opens at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Oct. 1-Dec. 30, 2005, and travels to the MIT List Visual Art Center, Feb. 9-Apr. 9, 2006, as well as other venues through 2007.
