The focus at Cranbrook Academy of Art is to
stimulate and nurture ideas through work, and
to develop the skills necessary for a lifetime
practice as serious artists, architects, and
designers. The students work in a professional
studio environment, and are given the responsibility
and freedom to develop their critical
thinking and individual aesthetic voice with the
guidance of their distinguished Artist-in-Residence.
There is not a formal class structure,
but an intense program of studio work,
critiques, reading groups/seminars, lectures by
visiting artists/critics, and student research.
Inter-disciplinary stimulus occurs through open
critiques and lectures across all departments,
an extensive Visiting Artist program with more
than 80 artists and critics each year, and the
Academy-wide Critical Studies and Humanities
lectures and symposia. Only 150 students of
exceptional promise comprise the two-year
full-time-only program. Dedicated solely to
graduate education, the Academy grants the
Master of Architecture degree and the Master
of Fine Arts degree in 2-D Design, 3-D Design,
Ceramics, Fiber, Metalsmithing, Painting,
Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture.
