Transmission. A 33-foot-tall tower with neon lights and blue, green and red lasers at Rockefeller Center from June to September, a Public Art Fund project.

And You, Seas. A 50-foot-high stainless-steel sculpture at the entrance to the harbor at Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph, Mich., a privately funded Krasl Art Center project.

3 Arthur Carter

The Couple. Bronze and stainless-steel sculpture, 30 feet high, in front of 90 Park Avenue, New York, a private commission.

4 Peter Voulkos

Amaya. One of 12 bronze sculptures on pedestals, ranging from 4 to 6 feet in height, temporarily sited along the El Paseo roadway in Palm Desert, Calif., a project of the Palm Desert Public Art Program.

5 Vito Acconci

Light Beams for the Sky of a Transfer Corridor. Sixteen translucent acrylic panels with fluorescent lights placed along an 800-foot-long corridor in the international terminal at the San Francisco airport, a city commission.

6 Tobi Kahn

Meditative Space: Emet. Three acrylic-on-canvas murals of sky and water, hand-painted wood-and-leather furniture designed by Kahn, including a bookstand with copies of the Hebrew Bible, the Old and New Testaments, and the Koran, at the HealthCare Chaplaincy's administrative headquarters in New York.

World Peace Prayer Fountain. A kinetic, 10-foot-tall bronze sphere covered with the prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in over 100 languages, at the Fayetteville Town Center in Arkansas, a privately funded project.

8 Anissa Mack

Pies for a Passerby. A small wood house near the Brooklyn Public Library, where the artist left freshly baked apple pies on the windowsill for passersby to "steal" during May and June, a Public Art Fund project.

9 Janet Zweig

Impersonator. Interactive flip-disc sign, at the Instructional Technology Center at Santa Fe Community College, a state commission.

10 Ursula von Rydingsvard

katul-katul. A 40-foot-wide plastic and aluminum form with tendrils that descend four stories, suspended in the atrium of the Queens Family Courthouse, a project of the City of New York, Department of Cultural Affairs.

11 Robert Graham

Great Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Cast bronze doors measuring 30 by 30 feet, topped by an 8-foot-tall bronze and gold-leaf statue of the Virgin Mary, at the entryway to the cathedral, commissioned by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

12 Joyce Cutler-Shaw

Sycamore Leaf Canopy. Eight powder-coated steel columns, 20 feet in height, from the artist's three-work installation at the Mission Valley Library in San Diego, a city commission.

13 Gary Hume

Back of a Snowman. A 10-foot-tall enamel-painted bronze snowman sited on the plaza of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Battery Park City, New York, from October 2002 to April 2003, a Creative Time project.

14 James Carpenter

Skyframe. A dichroic glass corona that refracts and reflects sunlight into a courtyard at the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, a state commission.

15 William Wegman

Portland Dog Bowl. An 8-by-10-foot tile floor and a bronze water bowl with a continuously bubbling water fountain for dogs in the North Park Blocks, Portland, Ore., a project of the Pearl Arts Foundation.

16 Jim Campbell

Primal Graphics 2002. A 10-by- 13-foot light board with moving silhouettes of human figures, on view from February to August in front of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Battery Park City, sponsored by Creative Time.

17 Dixie Friend Gay

Houston Bayou. An 8-by-73-foot glass-mosaic mural depicting native Gulf Coast flora and fauna, in a passageway at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, commissioned by the Houston Airport System.

18 Alice Aycock

Maze 2000. A 17-by-26-by-30-foot aluminum sculpture on the campus of the University of South Florida, Tampa, an Art in State Buildings commission using private and public funds.

19 Sheila Klein

Show and Hide. Five layers of motorized draperies in a 10-by-20-foot window, at the Mead Building in Portland, Ore., commissioned by the Regional Arts & Culture Council and the Multnomah County Percent for Art Program.

20 James Woodfill

Pulse. Interactive blue LED lights and a low-level soundtrack, in the stairwell of a Kansas City parking facility, a project of the Municipal Art Commission.

21 Scott Parsons

Algorithmic Tapestry. An 11,000-square-foot terrazzo floor at the Engineering Centers Building at University of Wisconsin, Madison, commissioned by the Wisconsin Arts Board, Percent for Art program.

22 Chris Janney

Whistle Grove. Twenty-four 10-foot-tall stainless-steel columns that emit steam and steamboat sounds, sited beneath a replica of the American Queen paddle wheel at the Public Landing in Cincinnati, a joint project of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission and the Greater Cincinnati Tall Stacks Commission.

23 Bruce Beasley

Vitality. A 30-foot-tall bronze sculpture topping a fountain at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, commissioned by the City of Oakland.
