Art show at old TWA terminal

Art in America,  Oct, 2004

In homage to Eero Saarinen's TWA terminal at Kennedy Airport in New York, an ambitious art exhibition is being mounted within the landmark building, before construction begins and the building undergoes alterations to become part of a new JetBlue terminal [see "Front Page," Dec. '03]. Organized by Rachel K. Ward, an independent curator and consultant, "Terminal 5" features works by 20 artists, including Vanessa Beecroft, Dan Graham, Kendell Geers, Toland Grinnell, Mark Handforth, Jenny Holzer, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Anri Sala, Tom Sachs and Santiago Sierra. The works--installed at ticket counters, luggage carousels, waiting lounges and other spaces--are intended to respond to the site and the concept of air travel.

Originally budgeted at $500,000, the show has been largely subsidized by donations and in-kind support. The New York State Council on the Arts gave a large grant for the project, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the terminal, has provided security and other services at a reduced cost. The budget airline JetBlue, which was selected by the Port Authority to redevelop the Saarinen facility, is a major supporter of the event, along with agnes b. and other corporate sponsors, as well as the Reed Foundation, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Sweden. A gift shop, media lounge and various events are scheduled for the run of the show, Oct. 1, 2004-Jan. 31, 2005. For information, go to www.terminal5.com. The exhibition will be the last chance to see the terminal in its original glory. Construction is set to begin once the show closes, and is scheduled for completion in 2008.
